ARMENIAN GENOCIDE MEMORIAL SQUARE
29th May 2008
On the 28th of May 2008, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, His Excellency Mr. Demetris Christofias, led the grand opening ceremony of the Armenian Genocide Monument in Larnaca.
The monument, located at Larnaca’s Phinikoudes seafront next to the town’s Marina and Port, marks the spot where tens of thousands of Armenian refugees fleeing persecution during the genocide of 1915-1923 first landed in Cyprus.
In his opening speech, President Christofias stressed that the creation of this monument was a joint project between the governments of Cyprus and Armenia and was inspired and initiated by the late Armenian Representative in the House of Representatives Bedros Kalaydjian.
We hereby express our sincere gratitude to the President of the Republic for his tireless efforts in implementing this project, which is of profound importance both to the people of Cyprus and to the Armenian nation as a whole. His determination to see the project through to a successful conclusion is greatly appreciated by Armenians throughout the world.
We would like to thank both the Mayor of Larnaca Mr. Andreas Moyseos and the Larnaca Municipal Council for their decision to allow, on exception, the erection of the monument on Larnaca’s seafront.
We also thank the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia Mr. Vahram Kazhoyan, as well as the monument’s architects Messrs. Angelos Demetriou and Michael Thrassou, the renowned sculptor Mr. Georgios Kalakallas, and everyone involved in the implementation of the project.
In yet another demonstration of its warm feelings of solidarity with and respect towards the Armenian people, the Government of Cyprus funded the creation of the Armenian Genocide Monument, while the granite plaques with the monument’s inscriptions were offered by the Government of Armenia.
The creation of the square linking the monument with the Larnaca promenade was funded by the Kalaydjian Foundation in memory of Bedros and Aram Kalaydjian.
